GOP issued Gazette Notification for creation of IWASRI. "Institute to work under general supervision and control of MOWP through high powered Board of Directors and to be administratively controlled by WAPDA"

UNDP agreed to provide FEC to IWASRI and UNDP Assistance continued till December 1997
  1987 Board of Directors emphasized the Research Coordination role of IWASRI at the National level.
  1988 Netherlands Research Assistance Project (NRAP) continued till June 2000
 

1998
 

AusAID/UNDP approved the project PAK/97/0024 in March, 1998 which continued till June 2005 (PC-I)

  1998 NDP assigned research studies to IWASRI
  2001 MREP and LIM attached with IWASRI
  2004 GOP brought IWASRI on Revenue Budget
  2005 PC-II for research component of IWASRI approved for three years (2004-2007)
  2008
 
Another PC-II for research component of IWASRI was submitted to Ministry of water & Power, Govt. of Pakistan for approval
     
  OBJECTIVES
  1


 
To conduct and foster a comprehensive multidisciplinary basic and applied research programme in a coordinated fashion on Water logging and Salinity problems the solution of which would have a high potential for agricultural development and environmental improvements.

To establish working relationships with all National and International Institutes dealing with Water logging and Salinity in order to bring together the latest research and experience for (i) review and dissemination and (ii) to identity areas of fruitful research.

To develop practical solutions to problems associated with Water logging and Salinity and to introduce these in "real life" situations.
  4

 
To carry out basic and applied research on water management problems associated with ground water and surface water relationships, crop yield, water uptake, drainage and salinity control.
