LAND & WATER MONITORING / EVALUATION OF
INDUS PLAIN (JULY 2008-JUNE 2013)

1 LOCATION
Land and Water Monitoring / Evaluation of Indus Plain for all over Pakistan.

2 SCOPE OF WORK

With the closure of SCARP's and transition of tubewells to the farmers, the scope of SMO activities was curtailed in 1997-98. however, research relating to (i) Salinity Survey, (ii) Institutionalized Environmental Monitoring of Land & Water Conditions (IEM) and Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) Monitoring were assigned to SMO during 1999 through NDP funding. As the significance and importance of Land and Water Monitoring / Evaluation Programme justifies its continuation on permanent basis which was also endorsed by CDWP decision dated 21.012006 to help assess the gravity of the waterlogging and salinity in the country and suggest timely remedial measures for future investment in water sector.

3 OBJECTIVES/BENEFITS
The proposed PC-II is to provide necessary data through continuous land and water monitoring / evaluation programme with objectives mentioned as under:-

(a) Ground Water Monitoring
i) Hydrological Monitoring of Depth to Watertable (DTW)
ii) Depletion / Mining of Ground Water.
iii)  Deterioration of Ground Water Quality.
iv) Pollution - Nature and Extent.
v)

Shallow Tubewell Quality Monitoring.

(b) Surface Water Quality Monitoring

i) Drainage Discharge and Rainfall Monitoring
ii) Water Quality of Main Drains, Rivers, Lakes and Ponds.
iii)

Nature and Extent of Industrial and Municipal Pollutants.

(c) Soil Salinity Monitoring

i) surface and Profile Salinity Monitoring of Resalinized canal  commands on a years cycle basis.
ii) Soil Salinity Evaluation in the Indus Plain.
iii)

Bench mark data collection for new canal command.

The ultimate aim of the proposed survey, monitoring / evaluation activities is to provide necessary data for planning and implementation of strategic both short and long term to boost the agricultural economy in the Indus Basin and also to overcome the difficulties due to salinity hazardous.

PRESENT STATUS / PROGRESS

PROGRESS ACHIEVED DURING JULY 2007 TO JUNE 2008

A.       REGULAR WORK

   I.        HYDROLOGIC MONITORING

i) Total of 6437 depth to Watertable (DTW) points were observed
bi-annually i.e. pre and post monsoon all over Pakistan.

ii) Depth to Watertable maps i.e. pre & post monsoon (2007-2008)
                 were prepared.

II.      WATER QUALITY MONITORING.

i)       3711 water samples were collected from private tubewells, canals, drains,
rivers, lakes & ponds for laboratory analysis.

ii)      Groundwater Quality Reports.

The following reports were published during 2007-2008.
1 Publication on Water Quality of selected drains of Pakistan issued as SM-300
2 Report on Water Quality of Cholistan issued under publication No.SM-301.
3 Draft report on Surface Water Quality of Indus Plain (2006-2007) is under process.
III. SOIL SALINITY MONITORING

i)

Soil salinity survey has been completed for Rayya Branch, M.R. Link, CBDC and Rohri South canal commands covering 3.064 million acres, 2243 auger holes were made upto 180 cm depth. Total of 8314 soil samples were collected for surface and profile salinity appraisal.

ii)

Soil salinity reports of Lower Jhelum and Rohri North canal commands were published under Publication Nos. S&R - 59&60 respectively whereas, draft reports for Rayya Branch, M.R. Link, Central Bari Doab canal (CBDC), Rohri South canal commands and data volume are in progress.

IV. ANALYSIS OF SOIL AND WATER SAMPLES

8836 soil and 4597 water samples were collected by SMO field staff and provided by private agencies, were analysed in soil and water testing laboratories of SMO.
